He is widely known for his roles as Harold Lee in the "Harold & Kumar" comedy film series and as Hikaru Sulu in the "Star Trek" reboot film series. He also gained critical acclaim for his lead role in the 2018 thriller film "Searching." His career also includes notable television roles, such as the main character in the 2021 live-action adaptation of the anime series "Cowboy Bebop," and his role as the first Asian American actor to play a romantic lead in a US television series, "Selfie" (2014).
